As cities across the UK embrace more sustainable and active modes of transport, Slough is stepping up its game. The town’s future vision is centred around creating a healthier, more dynamic, and proactive community by encouraging residents to walk, cycle, and run as part of their daily lives. Slough is transforming its infrastructure to promote active travel, aiming to create a healthier, dynamic, and proactive community. By enhancing facilities for cycling, walking, and running, the town seeks to make these modes of transport the natural choice for short journeys by 2040.
Pat Hayes, Executive Director of Regeneration, Housing & Environment at Slough Borough Council, said: “Active travel is more than just a way to get from A to B – it’s an investment in healthier communities, a cleaner environment, and a stronger local economy. By prioritising walking, cycling, and sustainable transport, we reduce congestion, improve air quality, and create safer, more liveable streets. Towns that embrace active travel are not only improving public health but also attracting businesses, boosting local economies, and future-proofing their infrastructure for generations to come.”

Expanding Slough’s Cycle Network
Slough is an ideal area for cycling due to its compact size and flat terrain. Virtually the whole of the borough is within a 20-minute ride of the town centre. Walking and cycling are an ideal alternative to the car for many journeys, including shopping, work and school trips, and visiting friends and relatives.
One of the standout features of Slough’s active travel infrastructure is its cycle route to Heathrow Airport, which provides a vital link for commuters who prefer an eco-friendly and cost-effective mode of transport. But the work doesn’t stop there. The town is planning a series of cycleway extensions to improve connectivity, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel around safely and efficiently.
These cycleway extensions will not only reduce reliance on cars but also create a more enjoyable and accessible urban space for everyone. Whether for commuting, leisure, or exercise, the improved cycling infrastructure will be a key driver in promoting a more active lifestyle.
Encouraging Walking and Running in Slough
Walking and running are among the simplest yet most effective ways to stay active and healthy. Slough Borough Council is committed to making the town more pedestrian-friendly by introducing wider footpaths, safer crossings, and improved signage.
Local initiatives, such as guided walking groups and running clubs are also being supported to encourage people of all ages and fitness levels to get moving. These groups not only promote physical health but also build a sense of community and well-being among residents.
How Slough Borough Council is Supporting Active Travel
Slough Borough Council is leading the charge in promoting active travel through various measures, including:
Investment in Infrastructure: Upgrading cycle lanes, pedestrian pathways, and crossings to make travel safer and more accessible.
Active Travel Campaigns: Raising awareness about the benefits of walking and cycling through community events and engagement programmes.
School and Workplace Initiatives: Encouraging students and employees to walk or cycle to school and work through various schemes.
Bike Hire and Repair Services: Expanding access to bike hire schemes and providing maintenance stations across the town.
E-Scooters in Slough
E-scooters have returned to the town centre with provider Voi Technology hosting 300 e-scooters and 25 e-bikes. This provides an efficient and sustainable mode of transport, helping to reduce congestion and support eco-friendly travel options.
Slough first introduced an e-scooter rental trial in October 2020 as part of a government initiative to assess e-scooter benefits and inform future legislation. The new trial will continue until May 2026, when the Government will decide on legalisation. If approved, Slough may make the scheme permanent, subject to Cabinet approval.
As more towns and cities embrace alternative transport solutions, Slough continues to position itself as a forward-thinking, accessible, and connected urban hub.
A Forward-Thinking Investment Opportunity
Slough’s commitment to active travel is just one example of how the town is evolving into a dynamic, future-ready hub for investment. With major development projects underway, a strong local economy, and a focus on sustainability, Slough presents an exciting opportunity for investors looking to be part of a progressive urban landscape.
Improved Connectivity – With its proximity to London and excellent transport links, including the Elizabeth Line, integrating cycling and walking into daily commutes makes Slough even more accessible.
Health & Wellbeing – Encouraging active travel reduces congestion, improves air quality, and promotes a healthier lifestyle for residents.
Attracting Businesses & Residents – Cities and towns that prioritise walkability and cycling infrastructure tend to attract more professionals, families, and businesses looking for a well-connected, sustainable environment.
Future-Proofing Infrastructure – As cities move towards net-zero carbon targets, investments in active travel infrastructure will help ensure long-term economic viability.
