Slough Is Now Ready for Take Off: Capitalising on Heathrow Corridor’s Growth

With Heathrow’s expansion plans gathering pace, the conversation now focuses on how investors and businesses can drive economic and social impact for the benefit of residents and communities across the Heathrow Corridor. For Slough, located at the gateway to Europe’s #1 airport by passenger volume, the opportunities are especially exciting.

From improved connectivity and increased trade to new jobs, commercial development and supply chain growth, Heathrow’s expansion has the potential to unlock significant economic benefits across the Thames Valley. As momentum builds behind the project, now is the ideal time for investors to look ahead and consider how they can capitalise on the opportunities taking shape close to home.

Benefiting From Heathrow's Expansion

The Heathrow Corridor is one of the UK’s most important economic growth regions, spanning West London and the Thames Valley. Home to world-leading businesses, across advanced manufacturing, logistics, technology, and professional services, the corridor plays a vital role in driving national productivity, trade, and investment.

As Heathrow Airport expands its capacity and connectivity, businesses seeking access to global markets are increasingly drawn to locations such as Slough that offer excellent transport links, a skilled workforce, and available commercial space.

Turning Strategic Advantage into Sustainable Growth

The key to success lies in collaboration, which is why senior leaders from Slough Borough Council joined partners from across the Heathrow Corridor at UKREiiF. The frontrunners discussed shared priorities, aligned investment strategies, and explored opportunities for sustainable growth across the Heathrow corridor and beyond.

Bringing together voices from local government, infrastructure, placemaking and economic development, the Slough is Now: Heathrow Corridor – Growth, Connectivity and Delivery panel discussion examined how the area’s strategic location, global connectivity and strong economic fundamentals are being translated into tangible outcomes for communities and businesses.

Discussions focused on the practical delivery of growth, including accelerating housing development, creating employment opportunities, investing in critical infrastructure, and attracting inward investment. The panel also highlighted the importance of placemaking to ensure growth delivers vibrant, sustainable places where people want to live, work and invest.

A Joined-Up Corridor Approach: Hillingdon, Hounslow, and Slough

A key emergent theme was how the value of deeper collaboration, between Hillingdon, Hounslow, and Slough, is unlocking the full potential of the Heathrow Corridor. Discussions highlighted that coordinated public-private collaboration is essential to delivering growth at scale and pace, ensuring that ambition is matched by effective delivery mechanisms.

It was clear that housing delivery must be closely aligned with infrastructure investment, employment strategies and high-quality placemaking if the corridor, across the three boroughs, is to realise its full potential in a sustainable and inclusive way.

A consistent message was that local employment must remain central to long-term development plans, ensuring that growth directly benefits existing communities and creates meaningful pathways into work. Slough is supremely positioned to respond, given its youthful, skilled and diverse workforce.

Building Britain’s Future

At a time when nearly one million young people across the UK are not in employment, education or training (Neet), the country is searching for practical solutions to one of its most pressing economic and social challenges. The infrastructure pipeline at the Heathrow Corridor presents a unique opportunity to address this crisis at scale, connecting young people with valuable opportunities.

As one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure programmes, Heathrow Corridor’s growth has the potential to create thousands of jobs, unlock new skills pathways and support the next generation of engineers, technicians, digital specialists and business leaders.

For communities across Slough and the wider Heathrow Corridor, this is about more than simply economic growth. It is about giving young people a meaningful stake in their own and the country’s future, ensuring they can contribute to and benefit from the prosperity that major investment can bring.

By aligning infrastructure delivery with skills development, the Heathrow Corridor has the potential to become a model for how growth creates opportunity, strengthens communities and builds Britain’s future.

Next Steps: Turning Ambition into Action

The conversations have reinforced that the opportunity presented by the Heathrow Corridor is not a future ambition, it is happening now. For Slough, this means playing a leading role in shaping the future of one of the UK's most significant economic corridors, ensuring growth delivers lasting benefits for residents, businesses and communities.

As part of the strategy acceleration, Slough Borough Council is developing a new study to assess the economic and social benefits of the Heathrow Corridor, expected to be published in the Autumn. The output will help shape future priorities, inform investment decisions, and strengthen the case for coordinated growth across the region.

Pat Hayes, Executive Director of Housing, Property and Regeneration at Slough Borough Council, says: "There has never been a more important time to get involved in shaping the future of the Heathrow Corridor. The scale of opportunity across infrastructure, skills, and housing is significant, but real success will come through collaboration and shared ambition.

“Slough is uniquely positioned at the heart of this growth story and has an important role to play in bringing partners together, driving investment and helping build the economy to shape opportunities for generations to come.”

As the borough looks ahead, for Slough Is Now to manifest the potential, strengthening partnerships, continuing active engagement across public and private sectors, and maintaining momentum will be essential to ensure the Heathrow Corridor delivers on its full investment capacity for the benefit of residents, communities and the nation.
