The Green Grass of Regeneration.

We all know that spending time in nature is good for us. It lifts our mood, improves our health, and helps us feel more connected to the world around us. But the value of nature extends far beyond personal wellbeing. Increasingly, towns and cities are recognising that green spaces deliver tangible economic returns too, attracting investment and talent, increasing property values, and fostering thriving, resilient communities.

CGI of Slough regeneration

Nature-Positive Investment

Slough is positioning itself as a pioneer of nature-positive regeneration, where environmental enhancement and economic growth advance together. By embedding biodiversity net gain, green corridors, and ecosystem services into its investment strategy, the town is setting a new benchmark for sustainable urban development. This forward-looking approach is improving residents’ quality of life while appealing to investors and corporates who understand that long-term prosperity depends on a healthy, balanced natural environment.

Building a Thriving, Green Economy

Slough’s regeneration vision goes beyond traditional development. Each new project is shaped by a commitment to restore and enhance the natural environment. From green roofs and living walls to pollinator-friendly landscapes and urban wetlands, nature-based solutions are being woven into the fabric of the town.

The ambition is clear: to create a resilient urban ecosystem that supports future residents and employers while strengthening Slough’s natural capital. Every development is an opportunity to reintroduce nature, creating spaces that improve wellbeing, attract investment, and build civic pride.

Green Corridors and Connected Communities

A cornerstone of Slough’s approach is the creation of green corridors – interconnected networks of parks, waterways, and natural landscapes that support biodiversity while enhancing quality of life. These corridors enable wildlife migration, improve air quality, capture carbon, and make the town more attractive as a place to live, work, and invest.

Pat Hayes, Executive Director of Housing, Property and Regeneration at Slough Borough Council, said: “Our vision for Slough is to show that regeneration and nature can thrive together. Such ‘green belt’ regeneration of degraded land has the potential to transform the Colne Valley corridor with up to 5,000 new homes, lakeside living, and enhanced biodiversity.”

Regeneration in Action

Considered development is already underway. Working with partners such as Homes England, the council is engaging communities in ambitious plans for the town’s future – including transforming the former Thames Valley University site into a vibrant new neighbourhood.

The North West Quadrant (NWQ) — a 9-acre site at the heart of Slough — has stood vacant since 2023. Now, it is set to become a key part of Slough’s 2040 vision: a landmark destination offering new homes, green spaces, and opportunities that reflect the town’s heritage and future ambitions.

A Hub for Nature-Positive Enterprise

The Slough Trading Estate is home to a growing number of companies embedding nature-positive principles into their operations. SEGRO, which owns and manages the estate, has made strong commitments through its Responsible SEGRO strategy – aiming to be net-zero carbon by 2030 and to enhance biodiversity across all its developments. New buildings and refurbishments incorporate green roofs, native planting, and wildlife habitats, ensuring that industrial growth actively supports ecological recovery.

Major occupiers such as Mars, O2, and UCB are also embracing greener business models, investing in renewable energy, waste reduction, and nature restoration initiatives. Together, these efforts are transforming the estate into a living example of how commerce and conservation can prosper side by side.

A Blueprint for the Future

Slough’s nature-positive regeneration model offers a blueprint for the future of sustainable urban investment. By valuing ecosystem services and placing nature at the heart of growth, the borough is unlocking new pathways for long-term resilience that benefit business, community, and planet alike.

For investors seeking to be part of the next chapter in sustainable urban regeneration, Slough represents an exceptional opportunity.
