Heathrow expansion could be a game-changer for Slough's economic growth.

In a significant development that could reshape Slough’s economic landscape, Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed that the government backs a third runway at Heathrow Airport.  During a major speech on economic growth, she says the runway is "badly needed" and could create 100,000 jobs.

A third runway at Heathrow is projected to reduce flight congestion over London, making travel more efficient and potentially opening up new international trade and investment opportunities. With Slough just a stone's throw from the airport, the town stands to gain significantly from improved connectivity, positioning it as an even more attractive location for businesses and investors.

A Strategic Business Hub

Slough already enjoys a prime position as a gateway to London and beyond, with unparalleled access to road, rail, and air networks. Located just 20 miles west of central London, the town is just a 20-minute train ride from Paddington. The expansion of Heathrow would further strengthen this connectivity, making Slough an even more strategic choice for businesses looking to establish a presence near a major international airport.

The town is undergoing a transformation, with significant investment in infrastructure, commercial developments, and residential projects. Its proximity to Heathrow has always been a key selling point, and the addition of a third runway could cement Slough's reputation as a business-friendly hub with global reach.

Slough’s Vision for the Future

Heathrow’s potential expansion comes at a time when Slough is positioning itself as an innovative area for investment. From cutting-edge business parks to the Build-to-Rent developments that cater to modern lifestyles, the town is setting the stage for long-term growth.

As Slough continues to attract investment and talent, the ripple effects of a third runway at Heathrow could be transformative. Businesses in sectors such as logistics, tech, and professional services could find new opportunities to thrive, while residents could benefit from improved job prospects and infrastructure.

Investing in Local Communities

Beyond its transport links, Slough is dedicated to improving the lives of its residents and local communities. Heathrow’s investment in local initiatives and sustainable growth directly contributes to the well-being of the surrounding area, ensuring that businesses can thrive while maintaining a positive impact on the environment and society.

Additionally, Slough Borough Council has committed to making Slough a great place to live and work. Through ongoing community funding, regeneration projects, and support for local businesses, Slough is building a bright future for its residents while creating a thriving business ecosystem.

Pat Hayes, Executive Director of Housing, Property, and Regeneration at Slough Borough Council says: “The expansion of Heathrow could be a catalyst for unlocking even greater opportunities in Slough. Our town already thrives on connectivity, and this development would further solidify Slough as a prime destination for businesses seeking access to both national and global markets. We’re excited about the transformative impact this could have on jobs, investment, and the prosperity of our local communities.”

A Hub for Sustainable Growth

In addition to its strategic location, Slough is also leading the way in sustainability. Heathrow has put a number of measures in place to reduce its carbon footprint. As part of its Connecting People and Planet sustainability strategy, the airport is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

A key initiative in this effort is the boost to Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with a target of 3% SAF use by the end of 2025, which is 1% above the UK government’s mandate. This initiative will cut 500,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, which is equivalent to 800,000 round trips from Heathrow to JFK.

The £86 million incentive available to airlines to support the shift to cleaner fuels showcases Heathrow’s commitment to sustainability, benefiting both local communities and global efforts to combat climate change.
