Salt Hill Park: A Green Gateway Driving Town Centre Growth, Culture and Community in Slough

With summer in our midst, Salt Hill Park steps confidently into focus as one of Slough’s most vibrant outdoor destinations, a living “pathway” between green space, community life, and the energy of the town centre.

More than just a park, it is fast becoming a connector, drawing people outdoors, increasing relaxation, and helping bridge retail, culture, and leisure across Slough’s evolving urban landscape.

With a growing calendar of events, Salt Hill Park is increasingly shaping how people experience the borough, not just as a place to visit, but a place to gather, celebrate, and stay longer.

From Parkland to Pulse Point

Salt Hill Park is evolving into a flexible, high-impact events venue capable of hosting everything from festivals and cultural showcases to grassroots community celebrations and branded activations.

Its accessibility, scale, and adaptability make it a natural home for cultural organisations and promoters, community-led festivals and celebrations, wellness and outdoor activity providers, and local businesses and creative brands.

It offers something increasingly rare, a large, open civic space that feels both local and scalable, rooted in community but ready for ambition.

Pat Hayes, Executive Director of Regeneration, Environment and Planning at Slough Borough Council, explains: “Salt Hill Park is one of Slough’s most important and versatile public spaces, and we are proud of its role at the heart of the borough.

“Its long history as a place for leisure, wellbeing and community use continues today, but we are also focused on unlocking its full potential as a destination for high-quality events and activities.

“By strengthening its connection with the town centre, we can support local businesses, attract more visitors, and ensure the park continues to deliver real economic and social value for Slough.”

A Proven Stage for Culture, Creativity and Community

Salt Hill Park’s events history already tells the story of a venue with momentum, resilient, responsive, and increasingly central to Slough’s cultural identity.

Recent festivals, such as Poetry in the Park, have brought together poets, rappers, and singers in live outdoor performances, drawing diverse audiences and reinforcing the park’s role as a cultural platform, even in challenging weather conditions.

Last year also saw one of its most ambitious community activations to date. In mid-July, hundreds attended the Project Sponge Water & Nature Festival, featuring citizen science demonstrations, live performances, nature trails, storytelling, and a solar-powered stage.

The day also included civic recognition and celebration, with visits from the High Sheriff of Berkshire, Sean Taylor, and Neel Rana, Deputy Mayor of Slough, following the official unveiling of the newly transformed tunnel mural, “Water Lives Here.”

The festival captured a wider message, a call for a greener, stronger future where resilience is built through people, place, and shared action.

A Park with Purpose: Designed for Connection

Managed by Slough Borough Council, Salt Hill Park has been part of the borough’s identity since 1907, when it was gifted as a public recreation ground for wellbeing, leisure, and open access to green space.

Today it blends landscaped gardens and natural parkland, sports courts and play areas, walking routes and open lawns, and a café and activity centre. This mix makes it uniquely adaptable, equally suited to everyday recreation and large-scale public events.

But its role now goes beyond leisure. Salt Hill Park is increasingly functioning as a civic pathway, a space that does not just host activity but actively feeds the town centre economy.

Coordinated programming and stronger links with local traders are helping extend visitor journeys beyond the park gates, encouraging footfall into Slough’s retail and hospitality offer. The result is a reinforcing loop: more events, more visitors, more engagement, and greater economic return for the borough.
